WHAT IS AN ALEBRIJE?

In 1936 the first alebrije was created by by a papier-mâché artist in Mexico City, Pedro Linares López. While suffering an illness, causing a fever, Pedro hallucinated being in a forest surrounded by trees, rocks, and a sky full of clouds, that then turned into magnificent creatures. Wild animals with exuberant colors, fierce teeth, wings, horns, big eyes and more, it was like nothing he had ever seen before. During his fever dream the creatures shouted out “Alebrijes! Alebrijes!
